New Takelma Language Books Published
The third and fourth books in the Takelma language primer series have been published and sent to all Cow Creek Tribal families.
“Colors” and “Numbers” are vocabulary books that teach children (and adults) new Takelma words to expand their learning. Both are modeled after traditional Cow Creek legends. “Colors” follows the “Coyote and the Fox” story, and “Numbers” is based on a traditional storytelling by Francis Johnson of how to build a house. The back cover of each book features pronunciation guides for each vocabulary word.
A set of the two books was recently mailed to all Tribal households. The Cow Creek Education Department devoted an entire day to unpacking, assembling, addressing and shipping the books to each family.
A fifth and a sixth book for Takelma language primers are in the works.
